Subcamp - Folk Fest

Subcamp Leader - Alan Smith

Why did you sign up as Subcamp Leader?

Poacher ’17 was such a blast, why wouldn’t you want to do it again? Subcamp Leader at Poacher must be the best job in Scouting and Guiding, but don’t tell anyone, they may want the job next time!

How long have you been involved in Scouting or Guiding?

Since the beginning of time. I joined Cubs when I was 8 and I do remember having a hexagonal Cubs Diamond jubilee badge on my uniform when I was a sixer, so you can work out how long ago that was.

What are you most looking forward to at Poacher 2022?

Working with some old friends. Movie Legends was clearly the best sub camp at Poacher ’17 and Folk Fest will be bringing many of that team back together along with some new faces.

Top 5 things to bring to Poacher:

  • A nice blanket to keep my knees warm during the afternoon snooze that all subcamp leaders take.
  • An unused activity ticket from Poacher ’17. I was given a ‘whiskey tasting’ activity ticket last time, it looked genuine to me, but never found out where the activity took place.
  • A 12-string guitar for the inevitable Folk concert on the subcamp. I just need to find someone to play it as I can’t.
  • My trusty plunger. Subcamp leaders never go far without an industrial sized plunger for attacking the latest blockage.
  • Earplugs, for when Beth, our Guiding subcamp leader, inevitably starts singing that infernal badger song again.

Subcamp Leader - Beth Dewires

Why did you sign up as Subcamp Leader?

I was a team member on Movie legends last time and absolutely loved it, and when Alan, who led Movie Legends last time, said he wanted to do it again, it was a no brainer to pair up with him!

How long have you been involved in Scouting or Guiding?

Most of my life! I started as a Rainbow aged 5, when I went to Guides I started helping at Rainbows, and I've never left since.

What are you most looking forward to at Poacher 2022?

Being reunited with my Movie Legends team and creating more memories and mischief!

Top 5 things to bring to Poacher:

  • Enthusiasm
  • Extra toilet roll
  • A camera to capture the memories
  • A badger mask for the badger song
  • ...and spare pants!
